Introduction

In simple words first of any story discuss about the hero but today we will know about the side hero of our today's story who just fell in love but didn't find love yes we are discussing about a boy named Lakunle who loves the heroine of this story from the beginning. Gone and never gave up hope to get him but what happened at the end of the story let's not see what happened to poor Lakunle in the end ;-

The main characters of the story

  • Lakunle ;- Lakunle is an educated man and he is educated in British education. Currently she is working as a school teacher. He wants Nigeria to pass through modernism.
  • Baroka ;- Baroka is one of the characters in the play The Lion and the Jewel who is described as the village chief. He is known as the Lion in the village for his physique and strength. He doesn't want his village to change and he basically always wants to show his power over the people of the village.

  • Sidi ;- Sidi is the heroine of this play and is a very beautiful young woman whose beauty seduced Baroka to propose her virginity. At the same time Sidi is very proud of her beauty because her picture was published in a foreign magazine which later led to her tragic situation.

THE LION AND JEWEL STORY

The play The Lion and Jewel is mainly divided into three parts. They are;- Morning, Noon and Night. So let us know what is the main point of this drama;-

Morning means in the morning

Morning;- The play begins by showing a vacant lot in the village of Ilujinle. This place is originally presented as the center of the village with a school nearby where Lakunle was teaching the children. Just at this time the heroine of this drama Sidi was going home with a pitcher full of water on her head.

At that time Lakunle came out of the school and blocked his way saying that a beautiful girl like you should not carry a water jug on your head as it will make your neck short and fat and you will look very ugly.

Moreover, she also says that Sid's clothes are not elegant, revealing different parts of her body, which excites the youth of the village and makes various speculations. Hearing this, Sidi got angry and told Lakunle that this is why the villagers called him mad. Hearing this, Lakunle told the Sidi that he did not care about the words of these uneducated idiots of the village.

Moreover, beautiful women have less intelligence than men, so arguing with them is completely stupid. Hearing this, Sidi got very angry and wanted to go home without listening to Lakunle, but Lakunle blocked his way and told him that he wanted to marry her. Sidi then says that he cannot marry Lakunle without a bride price because women without a bride price marry men who have been married before or who do not have virginity. So if you want to marry her, you have to marry her with a bride price.

At that time, a group of musicians were passing by and saw the Sidi and said that his picture had been published in a foreign magazine. A foreign journalist came and took pictures of the village and in that magazine the Sidi picture was printed big on the front page and the baroque picture was printed next to it. Hearing this, Sidi felt more proud that there was no one else in the area who felt as beautiful as her.

At that time, the people of the village requested Sidi to perform an act and when he asked what to act, everyone said that the photographer who had come to the village should perform the act. Sidi then asked Lakunle to play the photographer. Although Lakunal was not willing, he agreed to act as he could not give up on Sidi.

During the performance, Lakunle drove to the village and pretended to take pictures of different places and finally stood in front of the Sidi. He then thought that he might be walking around to take a picture of this girl and pretended to take a picture.

Suddenly Baroka appeared there and stopped the act and said that they want to bring the magazine to the village and Lakunle will help them in this task as he can bring the magazine by talking to the foreigners. As Lakunle and Sidi were leaving from there, Baroka looked at Sidi and said that it had been almost five months that there had been no marriage. Thus ends the first plot.

The second part of the story

Noon means what happened at noon ;-

Noon means noon;- Then one day at noon Sidi was walking by the market. Although she fell in her village but her mind went to that magazine because of that magazine the fame of her beauty spread around. At that time Baroka's elder wife Sadiku came to him and told him that Baroka wanted to marry her. And Sidi is so lucky that she is going to be Barro's fast wife. And Sidi knows well what is the status of first wife.

But Sidi rejects his proposal, saying that Barroca wants to marry him because the magazine has cropped Barroca's picture and Sidi's figure and beauty are better exposed. Saying this he returned Sadiku. Sadiku returned home and told Baroka about this. Barroca's last wife did not want Barroca to marry again.

Baroka became very angry as Sidi rejected the marriage proposal and started telling his wives that I am old so what happened. I have been satisfying my wives till now and my wives are always defeated by me. He then began to plan in his mind how to get Sidi into the bug.

He then called his elder wife Sadiqu and told her that he had lost his manhood. Barroca also requested him not to tell anyone about this. Barroca goes on to lament that his grandfather gave birth to twins at 67 and his father married at 65 but lost his manhood at 62 which is not acceptable.

The last episode of the story

Knight ;- Sadiku was very happy in his heart on hearing this and stood under a tree next to where Siddi was sitting, jumping and rejoicing at the loss of Barokar's manhood. Then when Siddi comes there, Sadiku narrates the incident to him and requests him to join the fun.

Lakunle on the other hand came there and heard everything and told them not to mock like that as Baroka would get angry anytime. But Sidi became overzealous and said that he would go to Baroka and mock him in front of him even though Lakunle repeatedly forbade Sidi.

When Sidi disobeyed Lakunle's orders and left, Lakunle told Sadiku that he wanted to modernize the village free from superstitions and eliminate bride price from the village. After that, Sidi went to Barroca's house and found that Barroca was having a wrestling competition there and seeing Sidi, he praised him while wrestling and started praising everyone else.

It also goes on to say that his grandfather gave birth to twins at the age of 67 but lost his manhood at the age of 62. Sidi was watching Baroka's wrestling competition and clapping, mocking that he had lost his manhood and wanted to kiss Baroka. When Baroka finally defeats his opponent in a wrestling match, Sidi's face turns black. Barroca then rapes Sidi in a compliment.

Before being raped by Barroca, sidi had no idea that it was actually Barroca's premeditated plan to trap him. When Lakunle hears about this incident of rape, he is very happy because now he can marry Sidi without any kind of bride price.

But Sidi was adamant that she wanted to marry Baroka because Sidi's traditional belief that a girl can only be a bedmate or live with only one man should not go beyond that. Besides, 62-year-old Baroka is physically stronger than Lakunle.

Sidi then prepares to marry Baroka and their wedding ceremony begins. When Baroka and Sidi were getting married, Lakunle danced and disappeared into the audience. And that is how this play ends with the defeat of modernity to the prevailing tradition.
